Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

An abdominal aortic aneurysm exam uses ultrasound to look for enlargement of the aorta, the largest artery in your abdomen.  Your iliac arteries, which are branches of the aorta, are also evaluated as part of this exam.  During the exam you will lie on your back.

You will need to follow the following Fasting Instructions:

Q: Why can’t I eat or drink anything before my abdominal ultrasound?

A: When you eat, drink, or even chew gum, you swallow air into the stomach and bowel. Sound waves do not penetrate air, making it harder to see the blood vessels. While some air is always present in the bowel, fasting before the exam ensures the best scan possible.

Fasting instructions for all non-diabetic patients:

  • Nothing to eat or drink (water is ok) for 8 hours before your ultrasound.
  • You may take ALL of your regular medications.
  • Do not take any vitamins, fiber pills/powder, chew gum or smoke tobacco.

Instructions for all diabetic patients:

  • Nothing to eat or drink (water is ok) for 6 hours before your ultrasound.  If you are unable to fast, please eat a low-fat diet (like toast, fruit or juice).  No dairy products or beverages with caffeine.
  • You may take ALL of your regular medications.
  • Do not take any vitamins, fiber pills/powder, chew gum or smoke tobacco.
