Carotid Artery

A carotid artery ultrasound is done to look for blockages or narrowing in the main arteries of the neck that may put you at risk for stroke.  The exam will give the doctor information about the location and amount of any narrowing due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries.  This exam usually includes both sides of your neck.  During the exam you will lie on your back with your chin tilted up and head turned to the right or left.  You will be asked to lie still without talking during the exam.

Helpful Hints:

  • Please do not wear necklaces, dangling earrings or high-necked shirts.
  • Please wear a short-sleeved shirt or a thin, long-sleeved shirt with sleeves that are easily pulled above the elbow (the technologist will be taking your blood pressure as part of this exam).
