Deep Venous Thrombosis

A deep venous thrombosis exam uses ultrasound to look for blood clots in the veins in your legs or arms.  During this exam you will lie on your back. At times the ultrasound technologist will use the ultrasound transducer to push on your leg or arm in order to compress the veins, which can be uncomfortable.  The ultrasound technologist will also squeeze your legs or arms at times to augment the blood flow.

Helpful Hints:

  • To evaluate for deep venous thrombosis in the leg, the exam extends from the top of the thigh to the ankle.  Please wear loose-fitting undergarments.
